Heswall Salt Marshes, River Dee.

Marshes evoke transition between the land and the sea. A place of bog, sucking sand, samphire and sea-grass. For many, places to avoid.
This morning at first light I went to Heswall salt marshes in the teaming rain. I waited and waited for a gap between the rains, and eventually got one, but all too brief. Snatched this image.
Will go again soon; if not for the photography then for the cockles and samphire and curlew. I think samphire is one of my very favourite vegetables. The best samphire I ever ate was at the Agnante restaurant in Glossa on Skopelos, Greece, 10 years ago.
As I waited this morning, I thought about the Viking raiding parties that sailed up the Dee and the
wreckers that worked this coastline.
